  • Tulips perform best in full sun to partial shade
  • Plant tulips when temperatures have cooled in your area in fall. Once your daytime temperatures are in the 60’s or lower consistently, this is a good time to plant your tulips.
  • Tulips require 12-16 weeks of consistent temperatures below 50 degrees in winter in order to produce a flower bud; tulips are best suited to cold climates.
  • Adequate drainage is essential to the health of your tulips. Amend your soil with top soil and organic matter such as compost, manure, leaf mold or peat moss prior to planting. After you have amended your soil, it should be light and easy to work with.
  • Fertilize at planting with Hi Yield Bulb Food or for organic gardening use Bulb-Tone. Apply fertilizer at least 3” below the bottom of the bulbs so that the roots will get the most benefit from the fertilizer.
  • Tulips should be planted at least 6-8” deep with the pointed side of the tulip facing towards the sky. Dig the planting hole 12” deep so you can add fertilizer to the bottom of the hole. After adding fertilizer back fill with 3-4” of soil, plant your bulbs, then back fill with remaining soil.
  • Space tulips 4-6” apart when planting individual bulbs. For mass planting and brilliant bursts of color in the garden, plant the bulbs 2-3” apart in bouquet planting groups, trenches and garden beds.
  • Immediately after planting, water the tulip planting area. This helps to eliminate air pockets in the soil. After the initial planting, it is not necessary to provide any supplemental water to the area. In spring once the tulips have emerged you may water as necessary, although spring rains often make providing additional water unnecessary.
  • Apply a layer a 2” layer of mulch in late fall.

This is my 4th time purchasing this 1000 tulip crate. With shipping the cost is <20 cents per bulb. Well worth the investment. They make perfect party favors and gifts in the fall. I plant them in bouquets of 30-50 bulbs per pocket as late as possible in the fall. They are stunning and make beautiful cut arrangements during the spring. Pro tip: Dig your pockets deep and in a dry area. Throw a few handfuls of gravel in each pocket before tossing in bulbs. Cover with soil and bonemeal, then water in. Water again in early spring and toss down some bunny repellent. Enjoy!

Cons:
I mass planted over 5000 bulbs on my farm. The mixed tulip collection was such a colorful show. I mixed them with daffs, crocus, hyacinths and the collection was stunning. My planting was easy. I rototilled a large path by my split cedar fence. Added 6 inches of blended top soil. Then planted groups of eight to ten bulbs in small pockets. Next, I covered them with more top soil I bought by the truck load. Last, I added bark on top to cover for winter. It took a couple of weekends as I work full time. Spring time was lovely. I shared cut bouquets with neighbors, friends, coworkers and family. We'll see how well the come back next year.
We have deer and they nibbled a few, but with mass planting, they ate the ones in front and left many untouched. Buy these. It will make your heart glad you did!

Beautiful, all I wanted was tulips that were not white for 80 ft of fence line.
5 of 1000 seemed to be damaged in shipping but everyone that I planted (baring the small handful the rabbits got) bloomed!
Mostly pink with a good amount of yellow and purple and a small amount of truest stunning orange blooms this fall. Very pleased. Absurdly good value. I would order again!

Pros:
  • price
  • excellent quality
  • good size
Cons:
The bulbs came in excellent condition, very healthy, and nice sized. My only complaint is that I bought a 1,000 of the rainbow mix and 1,000 purple and there was no label on either of the crates telling which was which. It doesn't make a big difference, but it would have been nice. Thrilled with the quality of the bulbs though! I purchased the same order of the Rainbow Tulips last year and was very pleased with resulting tulips!
