Description

Allium giganteum, or Giant Allium, is a true showstopper in the late spring garden. Towering above surrounding plants, it produces impressive globe-shaped clusters of hundreds of tiny, star-shaped violet-purple flowers that can reach up to 6 inches across. Held on sturdy stems, these dramatic blooms create a bold architectural effect that instantly draws attention in borders and landscape beds. Despite its grand appearance, Giant Allium is easy to grow and requires very little maintenance. It thrives in full sun, attracts bees and butterflies, and is naturally resistant to deer and rabbits.

The long-lasting blooms make exceptional cut flowers, while the ornamental seed heads continue to add interest well after flowering. Plant in groups for a breathtaking display of height, color, and elegance that returns year after year.

Planting Advice

Allium require full sun for the best blooms
Well drained soil is a must for allium bulbs
In heavy, clay and poorly drained soils amend the soil prior to planting. Amend your existing soil by incorporating a combination of top soil, compost, manure, and leaf mold.
Fertilize at planting with Hi Yield Bulb Food or for organic gardening use Bulb-Tone. Apply fertilizer at least 3” below the bottom of the bulbs so that the roots will get the most benefit from the fertilizer.
Plant allium bulbs 4-6” deep, with the old roots of the bulb touching the earth, the pointed end should be facing the sky.
Spacing will vary based on variety, refer to the Allium packaging for specifics. Plant allium in clusters or space throughout the garden for a neat geometric design element.
Immediately after planting, water the allium planting area. This helps to eliminate air pockets. After the initial planting bulbs do not require additional watering in fall or winter and prefer to be kept dry.
Apply a 2” layer of mulch in late fall.

All of the bulbs I purchased in the fall and planted have come up splendidly in the garden ! I am so excited to see them all bloom ! The alliums look terrific and the tulips are just beginning to open. Very pleased with my purchase ! Will definitely be ordering more this fall ! Thank you !
