These bulbs arrived later than anticipated, however they were quite large and all of them were in perfect shape. Since I was planning to plant them in pots, the late arrival was not a huge issue. Some of them are waking up, so I'm looking forward to a great show.
Hyacinth are one of my favorite flowers. I order these every year because I know they will perform well in our Houston winters.
I ordered the bulbs very late season. I was pleased that the bulbs arrived in excellent condition as end of season bulb orders can be hit or miss. I received firm bulbs with no sign of mildew. I look forward to the spring blooms.
I adore hyacinths and I discovered that different colors not only carried unique scents, but also tend to bloom at separate times. The pink hyacinths tend to bloom slightly faster than the other colors and their scent is sweeter. I ordered a bunch of these Jan Bos jumbo pack - and planted them in late fall. When planting I did a combination of several bulbs in one pot, and then individual bulbs in individual pots. These were then left outdoors to go through the 12-week chill period. I watered them sparingly, to prevent the bulbs from drying out (once every 4 weeks, with just a little trickle of water at the side of the pots). In Arlington, VA the weather has been finicky and at some point in February there was a false spring - which typically throws off the chill-period. The green shoots had started to come up and I was worried that the flowers would bloom partially and then retract. However, all was good - and they bloomed by mid-March. The scent and the colors were spectacular. One thing I noted was that the type of soil that one uses is important (even though one could 'force' the bulbs using the water method, I like to plant in organic potting soil). Because my soil is organic and I refuse to use pesticides. (Should aphids get to the hyacinth they will suck out the nectar and make the flowers tilt - so a little spray of diluted vinegar is helpful). The gorgeous ruffles of this flower are simply spectacular - when I was near the flowers the perfume simple leapt up at me. I was swooning at the beauty and the scent! The flowers last about 12 days before they start to fade away. (So I had to wait about 3 and half months before they bloomed - and then when nearing the 4th month they were done). Still worth the wait as they are dazzling!
I was a little worried that these would turn out to be red, as they are described as a "red hyacinth" in some places, but they are a very nice pink, just as I hoped they would be. I think 14 out of 15 came up, and maybe the last one will pop up eventually.
