Rising above all other plants in the garden mid-spring, this Red Fritillaria (or Crown Imperial) is full of elegance and grace. This focal point of your garden bears bright red/orange bells which look down on the rest of the world. Plant these in your garden to keep deer and pests away. Please note: this bulb should be planted on it's side in very well drained soil to avoid rotting.

    • Fritillaria require a full sun to partial shade location.
    • Well-drained soil is critical to health and growth of frtillaria bulbs; they are very susceptible to rotting in soils that do not drain well.
    • Amend the planting area with top soil or plant starter mix. The addition of organic matter such as compost, manure or peat is also necessary when amending your soil.
    • To help improve your soil structure, and make nutrients more readily available to the fritillaria bulbs add Kelp Meal when amending your soil.
    • Fritillaria bulbs have a hollow center from the previous year’s stem. This hollow center can easily collect water and lead to the bulb rotting over winter. To help prevent rotting from happening, plant the fritillaria bulb slightly on its side, with the roots facing the earth.
    • After amending your soil, plant your fritillaria bulbs 6” deep
    • Space your fritillaria 8-12” apart. Planting in groups of 3 or more will give the best appearance.
    • Water the planting area immediately after planting to eliminate air pockets. Fritillaria are very sensitive to rotting, any additional water in fall or winter is not suggested.
    • Apply a thick 2-3” layer of organic mulch to the planting area in mid to late fall.

Bought it on sale this winter. Couldn'tresistthe sale. Keeping it in a pot on the closed in porch. Started to grow right away. Has done well even though it's cold. I can't wait for it to take off. Looking forward to seeing it take off. Remember to put them on their side! Really big bulbs. Fun new looking plant. Hope the hummingbirds like it!

For years I have ordered bulbs from you and have always been happy. They are always so big and healthy looking.
Can’t wait for my new fritillaria to pop up. Tulips will be beautiful again, as always.
