Paperwhite bulbs are one of the best flower bulbs for indoor forcing and are typically used for this purpose. Mostly thought of us holiday gifts or decorations, these bulbs typically begin to sprout within two weeks of planting in soil without requiring any pre-chilling as other fall-planted bulbs do. A member of the Narcissus or Daffodil family, these bulbs produce beautifully dainty white daffodil-like blooms with a slight fragrance. The blooms of these bulbs typically begin to appear within 4-6 weeks of planting.
Planting Ziva Paperwhites
  1. Paperwhites are typically sold in fall or early winter and should be planted within 2 weeks of receiving or purchasing them.
  2. Fill a well-drained pot or container with nutrient-rich potting soil. Plant the bulbs just under the soil surface, with pointed-side up. Position bulbs so that the tops just protrude the soil.
  3. If desired, bulbs can also be grown in a shallow pot container a layer of stones. Fill the pot with water so that the level of the water does not quite reach the tops of the stones. Place bulbs on top of the stones, without allowing the water to touch the bulbs.
  4. Continue to provide water on a weekly basis if planted in soil to keep bulbs slightly moist but not wet. If placed on stones over water, continue to provide water to keep it at a level just under the bulbs.
  5. Place container or pot in an area of your home which remains warm and receives indirect sunlight.
  6. Once blooms have faded, slowly decrease water to allow foliage to dry and brown.
  7. Once foliage has died completely, remove from bulb and remove bulbs from container, placing them on a screen or paper bag to allow them to dry out.
  8. Once completely dry (in approximately 1-2 weeks), place bulbs in a cool, dry place until ready to restart the growing process.
